Edible Plant Project
| Last updated on September 11, 2011 |
The Edible Plant Project, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, is a nonprofit plant nursery in Gainesville, FL. Our mission is to propagate food plants that are appropriate to the North Central Florida area, especially those that grow well here and are not generally available from other sources.
Description:
We have a volunteer run plant nursery, greenhouse & seed bank. We offer opportunities to learn how to & practice organic reproduction (propagation) of plants. Volunteer credit & monthly plant sales at the Farmer's Market Downtown is how we distribute our plants & support the nursery. The Edible Plant Project seeks to be a low-cost source of these plants so that people may gain benefit from them, and reduce their dependence on corporate agribusiness for their food supply. Among our aims is to reduce the environmental impact of food production. We do this by encouraging people to grow food where they live, on land already designated for urban or suburban usage. This reduces impacts associated with transportation and land area needed for agriculture. In addition, we focus on plant species that need little or no inputs, such as water, fertilizer, and pesticide. Other focus includes open-pollinated annual seeds, warm season leaf-vegetables, native edibles, and others as we see fit.
